In-Person Logistics
Morning Session
Breakfast will be held at Rachel Carson College Dining Hall. Most full-group morning sessions will be held in the Oakes Learning Center, with additional workshop space available in Oakes Academic rooms 102, 103, 106, and 222. These rooms are reserved for Code/Astro from 8:00am to 9:00pm during the workshop week.
Oakes Learning Center and the Oakes Academic classrooms are near the workshop housing area, so participants should plan to arrive a few minutes early each morning to find the correct room and get settled.
Lunch
Lunch will be held at Rachel Carson College Dining Hall, or participants may choose to eat on their own. Afternoon sessions will return to the Oakes workshop spaces, so please plan to be back at Oakes by 1:00pm. More information about Santa Cruz food recommendations and things to do will be included below.
Afternoon Session
Afternoon sessions will be held in the Oakes workshop spaces. Project work will use the Oakes Academic classrooms, including rooms 102, 103, 106, and 222. Optional afternoon sessions may be assigned to specific Oakes Academic rooms. The instructors and TAs will be available in these rooms during the afternoon to answer questions and discuss projects with each group.
There will be nothing planned on Wednesday afternoon, although Oakes Learning Center and the Oakes Academic classrooms are available if you want to work on your project. This gives you time to rest, explore campus, or visit Santa Cruz.
Quiet Space Access
Oakes 101 will be available as a dedicated quiet space throughout the week.
COVID Policy
Masking is optional. If you do test positive for COVID, please let us know and attend the workshop remotely. We can cover costs for you to properly quarantine in a hotel room until you recover.
Oakes In-Person Rooms
The main workshop space will be the Oakes Learning Center. Additional project work and optional session spaces are available in Oakes Academic rooms 102, 103, 106, and 222. These rooms are reserved for Code/Astro during the workshop week.
During afternoon project work, groups may use any available Oakes Academic classroom. Spaces are first-come-first-serve, so you and your group should decide where you want to work. The instructors and TAs will be nearby to answer questions and discuss projects.
Please let us know if there are insufficient plugs, and we can bring more. Please keep the rooms clean, as these are shared spaces.
Getting to Santa Cruz from San José Mineta International Airport (SJC)
San José Mineta International Airport is usually the easiest airport for getting to Santa Cruz.
Public Transportation
The main public transit route is:
- From SJC, take VTA Route 60 or a rideshare/taxi to a transit connection in San José.
- Go to San José Diridon Station.
- From San José Diridon, take the Highway 17 Express bus to Downtown Santa Cruz.
- From Downtown Santa Cruz, take a local bus or rideshare to UC Santa Cruz / Oakes.
SJC’s public transit page notes that VTA Route 60 serves Terminal A and Terminal B and connects the airport to regional transit. Santa Cruz METRO’s Highway 17 Express connects San José Diridon Station with Santa Cruz. Please check the latest schedules before traveling.
Taxi/Uber/Lyft
A taxi, Uber, or Lyft from SJC to Santa Cruz is the most direct option, but it is usually more expensive than public transportation. Travel time depends on traffic on Highway 17.
Getting to Santa Cruz from San Francisco International Airport (SFO)
San Francisco International Airport is also possible, but the route is less direct than SJC.
Public Transportation
The main public transit route is:
- From SFO, connect to Millbrae Station by BART or SamTrans.
- From Millbrae, take Caltrain southbound to San José Diridon Station.
- From San José Diridon, take the Highway 17 Express bus to Downtown Santa Cruz.
- From Downtown Santa Cruz, take a local bus or rideshare to UC Santa Cruz / Oakes.
This route has multiple transfers, so participants should plan extra time and check schedules before traveling.
Getting between UC Santa Cruz, Oakes, and Downtown Santa Cruz
UC Santa Cruz is fairly isolated from the rest of town. The campus is up the hill from Downtown Santa Cruz, so walking downtown is usually not the best option.
Santa Cruz METRO buses connect campus with Downtown Santa Cruz and other parts of town. Useful campus routes may include routes such as 11, 16, 18, 19, and 20, but participants should always check the current Santa Cruz METRO routes and schedules before traveling.
For getting around campus, UC Santa Cruz also has campus transit options. More information is available through UCSC Transportation & Parking Services.
The main downtown transit hub is the Santa Cruz METRO Center. This is where participants can connect between local Santa Cruz buses and the Highway 17 Express.
Things to do in Santa Cruz
Santa Cruz has a mix of beach, redwood, downtown, and campus-adjacent options.
